For years I tried (and failed) to lose weight, gain energy and *fix* myself the only way I thought was possible..

* Eat less and exercise more
* Give up all carbs and my favorite foods
* Go crazy counting calories and weighing food.

Most of us don’t think of mold…

Until it’s too late…

Silent and unseen, mold can drastically affect your health especially when you have underlying conditions.

Mold spores are everywhere all they need is water/condensation and a food source to grow.

Spices are prone to mold growth and subsequent production of secondary metabolites called mycotoxins.

Mold not only spoils spices, but it may also produce mycotoxins that are genotoxic, carcinogenic or lead to food-borne illnesses.

Each time you reopen those spices to use them, the condensation has created mold spores (which start growing within 48 hours), they oxidize the spices when air hits them and this also degrades the aroma, flavor and benefits of the spices.

Environmental impacts on our health are very real. Oftentimes we don’t even consider them as a reason for why we’re feeling sick, especially within our own homes.

Environmental toxins are the giant purple elephant in the room. They are often the last thing to be addressed (if at all) on someone’s journey to healing a chronic condition, being overweight, stubborn belly fat, and stress and yet, the inconvenient truth is that everyday exposures- in our homes, our drinking water, our personal care products, even out mattresses-are doing more harm than we often give it credit.

Spices do have a shelf life, BUT if you notice they don’t smell the same, clumping inside (you know where you’re banging it against the counter or your hand) or on the lid- toss those spices out. 🚮

We’re living in a toxic world, and there’s good evidence that it’s making us sick! A non toxic lifestyle can seem overwhelming especially if you don’t understand why it’s important and how it connects to not just gut health but your overall wellbeing.

While many things can lead to weakened immune health (poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, being sedentary, etc), an often overlooked factor is exposure to environmental chemicals.

Here are some of the ways that exposure to environmental chemicals can impact our immune health:

❌ Disrupting normal immune function: many chemicals have been shown to alter the production & activity of immune cells, including cytokines, which can impair our body’s ability to mount an effective immune response against pathogens, thereby increasing the risk of infection.

❌ Increased inflammation: many chemicals can trigger inappropriate inflammatory responses, leading to chronic inflammation, which can in turn weaken the immune system, contribute to inflammatory conditions, and trigger autoimmune disease.

❌ Immune suppression: Some toxic exposures have been shown to suppress normal immune function, leading to increased risk of infections, poor wound healing, and even reduced vaccine response.

❌ Allergic and Autoimmune Reactions: Some chemicals can trigger allergic reactions and autoimmune responses in susceptible people. There is strong evidence that asthma, allergies, and autoimmune diseases have a significant environmental component.

❌ Altered Gut Microbiome. Many toxic exposures can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiota, which plays an enormous role in regulating a healthy immune system. Gut dysbiosis can weaken the immune system, lead to inflammatory conditions, and trigger autoimmune flares.

This is just part of why I make a point of talking a lot about environmental chemical exposure - it’s a hugely important topic to address!

Healthy meals deserves to taste good 🤤

This also works as a delicious meal prep 🙌🏽

In functional medicine we believe in getting 30 diverse plants a week. This helps improve your gut health by boosting the diversity and health of your gut microbiome.

If 30 sounds like a lot, this includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices!

Does that mean having veggies with every meal- nope but when you can eating multiple veggies with herbs in one meal help. 😉

This meal contains EIGHT not including the veggie broth or the spices.

Ingredients
2 Cups Pasta
2-3 cups veggie broth
1 can diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon tomato paste
Diced mushrooms I used 7 small to medium baby Bella
1 Onion, diced
1 diced Zucchini
4 diced Carrots
1lb of ground beef or turkey
2 tablespoons avocado oil
1463678 cloves of garlic minced
1-2 handfuls of Spinach
Splash of Apple Cider Vinegar
Fresh parsley to top

Directions:

1. In a large skillet heat the olive oil. Add the mushrooms,onion, garlic, zucchini and carrots. Cook 5 minutes until tender and starting to brown
2. Add the beef and seasonings and cook until browned
3. Add the broth, tomatoes and noodles and cook covered for 10 minutes.
4. Add apple cider vinegar and cook 5 more minutes covered.
5. Add spinach and nutmeg let cook 2-3 mins

7. Top with parsley and serve with garlic bread

Stop overcomplicating dinner

It doesn’t always have to be fancy

Meatballs are always a hit in my house and I threw mine and my husband’s on toasted buns and gave the kids some pasta sauce.

Now listen I don’t include spices as an ingredient so judge ya mama 🥴🤣

Meat of choice
Panko soaked in wine (just trust me)
Spices of choice (I used smoked paprika, turmeric, garlic and onion powder, dash of dacy honey garlic pepper
And because I don’t use egg I use grated onion

I bake them at 375 for 20 mins I use a ice cream scoop because I’m not a pro 🤣🤣🥴

Place in sauce of choice- I added mushrooms, onions and sweet peppers- let it finish in the sauce, don’t let the sauce burn.

Throw zucchini in the air fryer

Toast the bread

Now most people add cheese and they are done (my husband) I don’t eat cheese so I sautéed spinach, mushrooms and onions)

Meat, onion, mushrooms, spinach, sauce, sweet peppers, panko, bread, cooking wine, zucchini… boom 10 ingredients. Protein, veggies and carbs 😉
